Spencer Wood is only 24 years old and is already making great moves in Europe. After coaching in Austria, he is headed to Munich Cowboys (Germany) for the upcoming season.
- I was contacted by the Munich Cowboys a few months ago, asking if I would be interested in their open OC position. It didn't take long after talking with the Head Coach (Garren Holley), President (Werner Maier), and GM (Tarik Ibrahim) that their vision for the future of this organization is unrivaled. They understand that Rome wasn't built in one day, and that it takes time to build a championship contender. The vision is there and I'm excited about what the future holds for us.
Munich Cowboys compete in GFL (South Division), where in 2016 they didn't move to the playoffs. They ended the season with 5 wins and 9 losses. Coach Wood spent the season behind us in Austria, so he couldn't comment much on teams performance last year.
- We will have a shift in team culture and will put a heavy emphasis on our youth teams and community involvement. The organization as a whole, not just wins and losses, will be our focus.
We're going to try to win the first game, then we'll try to win the second, then the third, etc. Take it one game at a time. We have a healthy mix of young and veteran players, which is a positive. My expectations are to be better in all aspects of the organization. If we can do that, the future will be very bright for the Munich Cowboys.
As of right now, Coach Wood is one of the youngest imported coordinators to ever coach in Germany.
- I've been fortunate to play and coach under some fantastic coaches in my career, which has helped shape and mold how I approach the game. I still have a lot to learn - I want to be a learner, not a knower. The Munich Cowboys have won more games in the GFL than any other team in Germany; I'm excited to work with Garren and our guys to help restore our old winning ways.
