What is "the off season"? Does it exist in football?
Off season in football is one of the most important think, a good pre-season workout can change your skill during championship in each position you play. Right now, every year, you have a big improvement for these kinds of programs, we use this season a cross-fit football program prepared from one former player of Iowa Hawkeyes.
What are the main goals coaches work towards during this time?
Goals for me are to get in best shape and work as much as possible the physical part because during the season we focus our job on preparing the game and we leave athletic part to the players.
When do you start looking for imports? What things do you consider when sifting through options?
I'm always looking for them. Big European coaches taught me that it is so important to talk with them a lot and keep in touch, in this way you will not have a bad surprise when you want to sign them. After I sign who I need for my season and the best of them that can fit inside our program. We are not big organization right now, so we are looking for guys that wanna made a good experience in a beautiful place as Spain.
What things can an import do to increase their chances of gaining a teams interest?
As I've told you before - they have to fit inside our program, we are not looking for superstars or game changers, at level where we play right now I think more than 60% of the American imports can make a big difference, so what we are looking for is for good guys that can feel comfortable here in our city and with our young program.
What is the worst thing an athlete can do to hurt their chances?
I think it is the form in how the introduce themselves to you, some guys when sending you an email or message use a very bad form to "sell" themselves, and of course superstar attitude is not working with me.
Do you have any interesting off season stories?
Yes I have couple ones, but one of the funnier ones is the one from this season where we were in contact with a lineman where everything looked good with the deal that we offered him, he was ready to join us but we saw that he signed up with another team from week before.
Once you have narrowed it down, what factors go into furthering your selection process?
After talking with them for couple months, we see who is what we are looking for and we sign him.
What type of team building events do you do between seasons?
We try to play at least two pre-season game/scrimmages, one with team weaker than us and another one with a stronger team.
Do you have any advice to players about how to approach their own off-season and recruiting seasons?
Just be yourself and try to send the coaches the best highlights video possible.
