Women’s tackle football is here to stay -- “Gridiron Queendom” documentary puts the U.S. women’s national tackle football team on the map.
It is Women’s History Month and the producers of “Gridiron Queendom” are determined to make sure the gold-medal winning U.S. women’s national tackle football team is not forgotten AGAIN.
The American public is quite familiar with the country’s gold-medal soccer, hockey, softball, and gymnastics teams, yet despite the recent 40th anniversary of Title IX, there still exists one gold-medal women’s team that has never received recognition until now.
In 2010, 45 women from across the country represented the United States in the International Federation of American Football’s (IFAF) Women’s World Championship. Held in Sweden, the Women’s World Championship was the first-ever international tackle football tournament in which women were allowed to play. The 45 members of Team USA competed against five other countries (Germany, Austria, Finland, Sweden, and Canada), outscoring their opponents by a resounding 201 points and securing the first-ever gold medal in the history of women’s international tackle football.
Gridiron Queendom is a documentary film focused on the 2013 U.S. women’s national tackle football team and the journey to defend their gold-medal title at the IFAF Women’s World Championship this summer in Finland. The film will provide insight into the personal lives and motivations of the women who comprise Team USA, as well as the rise of the popularity of the sport both domestically and abroad. Gridiron Queendom will feature interviews and commentary from players and staff from the NFL, USA Football, and other women’s tackle football teams from around the world.
Gridiron Queendom is being funding via the crowdsourcing website, Indiegogo where supporters of the film can receive perks such as t-shirts, and American flags autographed by all 45 members of the U.S. women’s national tackle football team.
Adrienne Smith of Team USA says: "I am so excited to announce the launch of Gridiron Queendom, a company dedicated to the advancement and unification of women's tackle football throughout the world.. Our first endeavor is a feature-length documentary film that will focus on the U.S. women's national football team and their journey to defend their gold medal at the 2013 IFAF Women's World Championship in Finland. The documentary will also highlight the remarkable women who comprise the other competing national teams from Spain, Germany, Finland, Sweden, and Canada. It is clear that women's tackle football is here to stay and Gridiron Queendom is the place where fans and players around the world can come together as a cohesive community."
Gridiron Queendom is scheduled to be completed after the IFAF Women’s World Championship in July. The documentary film will prove to be an inspirational and unprecedented look into a vibrant sports subculture that is on the cusp of becoming part of the American mainstream.
